About Peng Chau

A tiny, quiet place, but
will surprise you every time you go.
Welcome to Peng Chau!
Are you tired of the fast pace of life and sick of the bad air quality in the Hong Kong city?
Are you looking for a quiet and friendly place to relax?
Are you a lover of historic heritage?
If so, Peng Chau may be the best choice for you:)
Peng Chau was one of the industrial centers of Hong Kong during the 70s. It was once a hive of Hong Kong’s lime and matchsticks production. The glorious period ended at the time when innovative technologies emerged. The old factories were therefore closed and abandoned. That is the reason why there are a few rural heritages in Peng Chau; for instance, the leather factory, stone houses, old sign of the Great China Match Factory. Some of them even have been graded III status of historical buildings by the Antiquities and Monuments Office.
Apart from its industrial background, Peng Chau is also a place that is full of religious belief. As an island in the middle of the sea, it is believed that worshiping gods and goddess, like the Tin Hau and KamFa Goddess, can protect people from marine accidents and bless them with good luck. There are a few temples for people to worship and pray. Also, festivals for various gods and goddesses are held on the island at different times of the year. The festivals feature a range of activities to celebrate gods, attracting both local and non-local people to visit and join the festival.
Discovering the island Peng Chau brought four students from three different countries together.Together we discovered different islands around Hong Kong. Finally, we were most fascinated by the beauty of Peng Chau. For the University project ‘Exploring Hong Kong’s nature and rural heritages’ we decided to create a website that provides information on this beautiful island and its rural heritages.
