Drawing  for Visualization  Experimentation

Course: Drawing for Visualization and Experimentation
  Lecturer: Ms Ng Ka Sum

Lecture Journal

It was the first lesson of the drawing class.

As I did not learn the basic skill of drawing, I was quite worry about this course. But I believe practice makes perfect; I may not be the best, but at least I can try... I am still looking forward for this course.and can only hold a little amount of liquid, so I made another design. The new design is a pot with two mouths and two layers, one is for the oil, and other is for the soy sauce. I am quite satisfied with my new design.

Firstly, Ms Ng introduce the tools, materials and paper to us. Everyone has gotten a sketchbook for practices and as a tool to record and develop ideas. And we started to do some excerises.

Lecture 1

Studio Practices:

1.Communal Drawing

2.Tactile Drawing

3.Interaction of line and shape

At the end of the lecture, Ms Ng shared an art event to all of us: the Fotanian Open Studios. She inspired me to visit there. It was such a mind-blowing event. I visited different studios and talked with the artists there.

Homework:

Tone scales & strokes practices.

After lecture, we have practices to do. Here are the works that I have done after the lecture one.

Lecture 2

In this lecture, we learned about the gesture drawing, liner drawing as well as the tonal drawing.

We practiced by looking a model(hands picking thing) and drew on the sketch book. This is one of the method to learn how to draw by ‘eyes’.

Although I am quite familiar with linear drawing, I do not know much about how to draw the light and shade of an image. I hope I can improve the technique of articulation, so that I can know how to draw things more realistic.

Lecture 3

Focus:

Tonal Drawing

Gestural tone drawing

I worked on a triangle and square. It is quite hard for me to draw , as the angle was not really easy to work on(to me). And it’s a challenge for me to draw the transformation of light and dark part of the object.

We worked on the same model but drew in different style. Each style has their unique feeling. I like drawing with dots and manic marks, because I can feel free to draw it. It can somehow release my stress as well. And I feel good about it.

Lecture 4

Focus:

Space and perspectiveIn

In this lecture, we learn the theories of perspective and the way draw things by using the theories. We also learned to see 2D artworks from multiple perspectives.

Theories:

One point perspective -> single point with one vanishing pointTwo point perspective -> two vanishing pointsThree point perspective -> three vanishing pointsMuti-perspective -> many vanishing points(it depends)

Drawing perspectives really need time to observe the object as well as drawing the lines accurately. I love to draw buildings but I find it hard to draw them without using any rulers…

Studio practice:We went outside and practiced to draw things with perspective. The picture above is my work.

For the right hand side, those are the worls that Iworked on the homework. I drew buildings in 'imaginary; perspective, and the others are the practices on perspective.

Lecture 5

Focus: Visit to the Osage Gallery.

Lecture 6&7

Focus:  Body movement , figure drawing.

Studio Practice:

- Bean drawing : By observing different movement, and draw it in the bean shape, in order to practice the simple body movement.

- Human figure drawing: Models were invited to pose and we started to draw their pose.

Lecture 8

Focus:Presentation of the Drawing Machine

Each group had invited at least one drawing machine, which could create interesting effects during the creation of works.

Here are some of photos taken on the lesson. They were the drawing machine created by other group:

Our machine.

Lecture 8&9

Focus: MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECT
