[Structuralism]The Giver : A systematic world without feeling
The Giver is based on the famous scientific novel, illustrating a world that everything is in order, everyone are strictly obey to the rules, and have no feelings.
Human decided to get rid of feelings, race and history after a war. They build a systematic community, where everything has specific standard and in orders. A fair world is built, everyone follow the same standard, being treated in the same way. In order to avoid emotional fights and all those ‘the uncertainty in life’ caused by human emotion, everyone is required to receive injection everyday to ease their feeling. A wonderful community is created. With no worries, no pain ,no sadness; people do not need to worry for their future, as all the things would be decided by the ‘leader’ and the ‘system’.
This movie shows the concept of structuralism, which the community is systemic, people only rely on the system and obey them, without individual thinking. And they believe that system is all they need to know and everything shall be restricted to the rules. For example, if babies did not pass the standard test, they would be ‘transfer to elsewhere’ (Death).
The color of the movie changes from black-and-white to colours from time-to-time, in showing the mood of ‘emotionless’ and ‘feeling’. Although the community is like a perfect place to live in, without feeling and the rights to decide, human is like robot and just like a white sheet of paper.
This is such a meaningful movie, which reminds me of ‘The island’.
